What attracted you to the Finance Graduate role at Parkdean Resorts?
I mentioned the finance graduate role to my husband and his question to me was, “Why would you not apply?” I couldn’t give him an answer. I understood the role would involve lots of hard work and studying, but having been supported through previous qualifications at Parkdean Resorts, I knew I would be given support through this, too. I knew I couldn’t miss an opportunity to progress further in my career.
What do you like about working for Parkdean Resorts?
Most of all, the people. By having amazing support from the people around me, I have been able to build a career through development opportunities.
What could you say about the support you have received since you have started?
I joined Parkdean 13 years ago on a 6-month temporary contract with no finance experience. Throughout my career, I have been supported every step of the way. I’ve been encouraged to take up opportunities, including; completing my AAT qualification; a Team Leader/Supervisor apprenticeship; and now, working to achieve my ACCA qualification. Both managers and colleagues have greatly supported me when I’ve been on their team by answering any queries I’ve had and walking me through new and complex processes.
What does your day-to-day look like in your role?
One of the great things about the Finance Graduate role is you’re given exposure to all areas of finance within Parkdean. Finance graduates rotate teams every six months. I’m now onto my 4th rotation of the scheme and each team has looked very different on a day-to-day basis. The further I go along the scheme the more I’m able to use the knowledge I’ve built up to be able to contribute to the team I’m in. The work I’ve been involved in has varied from month end management accounts to project managing a system upgrade.
What advice would you give someone who is considering applying for a grad role in Finance?
You need to be prepared to work hard and be aware that, at times, it can get overwhelming, but embrace the opportunities and support you are given as you progress in your career. You have nothing to lose, but so much to gain.
What are your future career aspirations?
I’m hoping to complete my ACCA qualification in Summer 2024. I have been thoroughly enjoying every team I’ve worked in thus far, and so I am still undecided as to which area of finance I would like to specialise in. However, I definitely see my future as still being a part of the PDR Finance Team.
