What skills do you need to be a Kitchen Assistant?

Posting date: 04/04/2024

Kitchen assistants play a big part in the smooth running of operations so don’t go thinking otherwise. From food prep and organising food storage to stock rotation and maintaining clean facilities, it’s safe to say no two days are the same when you’re a kitchen assistant.

If you’re someone who enjoys variety while contributing to making unforgettable memories for the people around you, then read on!

So, what skills does a kitchen assistant have we hear you ask? Well, to break it down, it’s important to have a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude when it comes to the busy kitchen environment - you’ve got to know how to navigate fast-paced changes while managing any pressure.

Confident communication with a team player mindset are kitchen assistant skills too, as well as keeping excellent customer service in mind. Bonus points if you’re also good with manual dexterity - kitchen equipment, food prep, cleaning, and maintenance all require fine motor skills!

Kitchen assistant key skills

Being a kitchen assistant means having a recipe book full of skills at your fingertips. We’ll cover a few key ones but remember, this isn’t an exhaustive list and there are many other skills our kitchen assistants serve up in their daily work.

And don’t worry if you’re reading this thinking, “Maybe this isn’t me”. If you’ve got buckets of positivity and passion as well as team spirit, we can teach you any skill you need to succeed in your new role!

Working well under pressure

Our kitchen assistants are the champions of navigating fast-paced situations. With high volumes of orders at peak times, keeping calm and composed is key to meeting our guest’s expectations.

In the whirlwind of a bustling kitchen, our assistants don’t break a sweat - unless it’s over a hot stove! They’re the masters of time management, adaptability, and seamlessly juggling tasks to maintain our standards.

Confident communicator and team player

In the kitchen, it’s like a symphony - every instrument (or team member) has a crucial part to play. Clear communication is our sheet music, ensuring that we all hit the right notes and avoid any kitchen calamities. Confident communicators are our conductors, orchestrating tasks, boosting productivity, and keeping our culinary melody harmonious!

The true Parkdean team spirit creates an atmosphere where the kitchen team can tackle challenges together and maintain safety and hygiene standards, all with a can-do attitude.

Excellent customer service

When you’re working in the kitchen, a positive attitude to customer service is like seasoning, making everything taste better! Think of it as the secret sauce that boosts satisfaction, spices up reputation, and keeps team spirits high. With a pinch of positivity, our kitchen assistants save the day one satisfied guest at a time.

Manual dexterity and fine motor skills

In a fast-paced kitchen setting, good manual dexterity and fine motor skills are culinary superpowers.

With these skills, our kitchen assistants can handle multiple tasks simultaneously, from whisking sauces to chopping vegetables with speed and precision. These skills help the kitchen become a culinary dream team.

Initiative and proactivity

Initiative and proactivity add flavour, zest, and a dash of brilliance to every dish. Our kitchen assistants demonstrate a knack for jumping into action to keep the culinary show on the road and turn up the heat on productivity.

Whether it’s anticipating the next move or lending a helping hand, our proactive stars shine bright.
