AI & Your Application: Using Tech to Help Your Personality Shine
At Parkdean Resorts, we’re all about creating amazing memories, and that starts with the people who join our team.
We know that applying for a new role can feel like a bit of a whirlwind, and with AI tools becoming part of everyday life, many of you are wondering: “Should I use this for my application?”
The short answer? Yes, but don’t rely too heavily on it!
Think of AI as a "helping hand" or a digital sous-chef. It can help you prep the ingredients, but you’re the one who adds the secret sauce that makes the dish special. Here’s how to use tech to boost your application while making sure your unique personality still takes centre stage.
The “Do’s”: Making AI work for you
When used correctly, AI is great when it comes to making you feel ready. Looking for some inspiration on how to use it? Look no further:
- Polish Your CV: We love a CV that’s easy to read. Use AI to check your spelling and grammar, or to help make your bullet points a bit punchier. It’s great for turning "I helped customers" into "Delivered high-quality service to ensure every guest had a brilliant stay."
- Research the Role: Not sure what a day in the life of an Accommodation or Guest Experience role looks like? Ask AI to summarise the key responsibilities (you can also read our careers blog too, though!) so you can tailor your application to what matters most.
- Level Up Your Interview Prep: Paste a job description into an AI tool and ask it to generate some interview questions for you. It’s a brilliant way to get your brain in gear before you meet our hiring teams.
- Find Your Structure: If you’re staring at a blank page, struggling to start your cover letter or update your CV, use AI to create an outline. It can help you organise your thoughts so you can focus on the fun part, filling in the blanks with your own experiences!
The “Don’ts”: Avoid sounding like a robot
Our recruiters are looking for Parkdean passion: a genuine, "can-do" attitude that makes our holiday parks stand out. Here’s how to avoid some common AI pitfalls:
- The "Copy-Paste" Trap: If you submit a generic AI response, our team will spot it a mile off. AI tends to use very formal, repetitive language. If your application sounds like a textbook, it’s missing the most important part: you.
- Faking Experience: Never let AI "invent" skills or work history for you. At Parkdean, we value honesty and personality above a "perfect" but fake CV. We hire for attitude and train for skills! It’s worth noting that AI can have a tendency to hallucinate too..
- Losing Your Voice: AI doesn't know about that time you went above and beyond in a previous role, or why you’re perfect for working in hospitality. Those stories are what make you stand out.
- Over-reliance on Screening Questions: When we ask why you want to work with us, we want to hear your reasons. Don't let a bot answer for you, we want to see your passion, not an algorithm's.
Top Tip: Read it out loud!
Before you hit "submit," give your application the ultimate check. Read your CV or cover letter out loud.
The Rule: If it doesn’t sound like something you would actually say in a 10-minute informal chat over a coffee, edit it until it does!
If the words feel too stiff or "corporate," swap them for words you’d actually use. We want to hire a person, not a programme!
Behind the hire: Hear from our TA team
We caught up with our hiring team to find out just what it is they look for when screening applications.
Here’s what we found out:
What makes a CV stand out to you straight away?
A clear and easy-to-read CV that quickly highlights your strengths and experience. The strongest CVs are not necessarily the longest or most detailed. Clear and specific examples of skills and achievements are often what stand out the most.
How do you feel about candidates using AI to support their applications?
Yes absolutely use it but don’t lose yourself. Our TAs are not looking for a perfect CV and we don’t want to lose your personality. Parkdean is all about the personality!
What should candidates avoid when using AI?
Copy and pasting the entire transcript. Make sure that you read it, tweak it, and send it! Make it sound like you because that's who we are really interested in. Ask yourself the question.... "Could I explain this in an interview?".
Can you tell if a CV is fully AI-generated?
Sometimes we can, as these CVs appear quite generic. We are all still learning about the world of AI, and AI can be used in many different ways. A big giveaway of an AI CV is the use of emojis!
Ready to Join the Parkdean Team?
AI is a brilliant tool to help you get organised, but your personality is what will actually land you the job. Use tech to sharpen your tools, but let your own voice do the talking.
